As the famous pastry chef Jacques Torres once said, “Death by Chocolate!”

Did you know that everything is better with chocolate? Well, yes, it is! There’s nothing better than a classic chocolate buttercream frosting to top any kind of dessert or cake.

This recipe follows the same vanilla buttercream frosting instruction but instead adds a lot chocolate goodie-ness to the mix, which makes it my favourite buttercream frosting.

Made with powdered sugar, cocoa powder, butter, vanilla, and milk, this chocolate buttercream frosting recipe is one you will make over and over again. This buttercream frosting works great for spreading on cakes, cupcakes, and decorating.

It’s important to note that when preparing a batch of this buttercream frosting you can follow these recipe instructions to start with, but it’s important to use your judgement on consistency.

The easiest way to do this is with the amount of milk you use.  The less milk you pour in the mix, the more stiff your frosting will be. With a stiffer consistency you can pipe decorative shapes and patterns on your baked goodies.

Pouring more milk turns the buttercream frosting into a smoother consistency. This allows you to spread and frost with ease.

The KEY to making any chocolate buttercream frosting is to make sure you begin with room temp butter. Always begin beating butter for at least 5 to 10 minutes before you add the sugar.

For cakes and cupcakes, I like to create a medium buttercream consistency. Top this chocolate buttercream frosting on any chocolate, vanilla or yellow cake for an instant sweet goodie hit.

TIP: If you’re butter becomes lumpy and grainy, it means your butter was too cold. Just keep beating the mixture in your stand mixture for a few minutes longer. It will eventually warm up the butter and smooth out.
