These cake pop kabobs are a great shortcut goodie!

A few years ago, cake pops made a huge impact in the dessert world. What’s more fun than eating a bite of cake on a stick? It’s delicious, sweet and portable.

While they are so many ways you can decorate a cake pop, I decided to form them into cake pop kabobs for a party. They’re easy to pick up and you don’t need plates or forks. (Less clean up!)

Most cake pop recipes instruct you to bake a cake, (from a box is best) and crumble it with icing to form balls. In my recipe, I skip that step, opting to use a Cake Baby Pop maker to bake the cake mix into pops. You can also use any cake pop pan that have become popular.

Why? I find that when mixing frosting with the crumbled cake and then dipping the cake pops into a frosting or candy coating produces a cake pop that is too sweet.

In this recipe, you use your favourite cake mix brand. In this case, I used a Yellow Cake mix and also added an envelope of pudding mix. The pudding mix makes the cake more dense, which helps with the cake pop kabobs being able to withstand dipping and holding their shape.

Once you’ve baked your cake pops, you simply dip them in a candy melt coating or a thin chocolate or vanilla frosting with a tsp or so of vegetable shortening added in for stability.

Let your cake pops cool in the fridge for 5 to 10 minutes before dipping. Once you’ve dipped them into their coating let them set on parchment paper in the fridge until they set. Then, form 3 pops through a kabob or cake pop stick to form cute little cake pop kabobs and top with nuts, or sprinkles.

And, as always, don’t worry about these being perfect. The homemade look is in!

They’re sure to be a hit with guests and perfect for kids’ parties.

Steps

1
Done

Prepare Vanilla boxed mix cake according to direction and add one pouch of vanilla pudding mix into the batter. (Use chocolate pudding mix if using chocolate cake mix, etc.) Beat with a hand mixer until combined

2
Done

Put cake batter into a piping bag and carefully fill cake pop maker or cake pan to rim. Most instruction advise not to fill the pans to the top. However, I found that when filling to 3/4 I did not get a full pop as you do when filling just to the top.

Bake according to directions. The Cake Pop maker will let you known when the cake pops are done. If using a pan in the oven, check pops after 10-12 minutes in a 350 degree oven.

3
Done

Let cake pops cool on a rack. Cool in fridge for 5 to 10 minutes before dipping into mix of your choice.

4
Done

Warm 1/2 frosting mix in microwave for 30 seconds. Add 1 tsp vegetable shortening to each 1/2 mix. Gently dip each cake pop ball and place on a piece of parchment. Sprinkle and decorate with toppings of choice like nuts and sprinkles.

Don't worry if it puddles and sets that way. Since you're using these as kababs they'll work will when skewered through a stick.

5
Done

Carefully skewer 3 cake pop balls onto pop sticks or kabob sticks. Refrigerate to set.

ENJOY!
